Brahms: Ein deutsches Requiem

Experience an evening of music that moves from quiet reflection to radiant consolation, centred on Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem).

One of the most deeply human works in the choral repertoire, Brahms’s Requiem is not a traditional liturgical mass for the dead, but a work written to comfort the living. Its soaring choruses, tender melodies and moments of thrilling grandeur have made it one of the composer’s best-loved masterpieces.

The programme also brings together two works of the German Romantic tradition: Fanny Mendelssohn’s Hiob, a powerful and expressive cantata inspired by the biblical story of Job, and Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, an intimate orchestral work of warmth and lyrical beauty.
