A Celebration of Vaughan Williams
Saturday 3 December 2022, 7:30 pm
Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford
The Oxford Bach Choir enjoyed a close relationship with Ralph Vaughan Williams for over half a century, giving early performances of many of his works, and above all giving in 1926 the world premiere of Sancta Civitas, his mystical and ecstatic evocation of the Last Judgement. In this the 150th year of his birth, we celebrate that friendship by performing again the masterpiece which we first gave to the world and which Vaughan Williams declared was his favourite among his choral works. The programme also includes Dona Nobis Pacem, Vaughan William’s heartfelt response to the ominous mood of the 1930s, and his beautiful Tallis Fantasia.
