The Dream of Gerontius

Sunday 8 December 2019, 5:00 pm

Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford

“This is the best of me.” Elgar wrote these words from John Ruskin on the autograph score of his great choral work The Dream of Gerontius, and few have disagreed with his verdict. Elgar’s deeply felt and passionate setting of John Henry Newman’s dramatic poem about the progress of a soul through death and into the afterlife to its judgement transformed the English choral tradition, and had a huge influence on his successors.

The Oxford Bach Choir will be conducted by Benjamin Nicholas, accompanied by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and with soloists Ed Lyon (Tenor), Kathryn Rudge (Contralto) and Roderick Williams (Baritone), one of the choir’s Vice-Presidents.

Duration: 1.5 hours (no interval)
