Stephen Clarke

Stephen Clarke was a chorister at New College Oxford followed by Abingdon School. He then studied music at Oxford and conducting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

He has conducted Schola Cantorum of Oxford, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Chorus and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and prepared the London Symphony Chorus for concerts by Bernstein, Sir Colin Davis, Rostropovich and Ozawa. He was assistant conductor for a season at Geneva Grand Theatre, and has worked on several operatic productions for BBC TV.

Stephen has had an extensive conducting career as well as working for the BBC on diverse television opera productions. He was also Head of Music at Garsington Opera from 2001 to 2004 and Precentor (Director of Music) at Radley College from 2003 until 2016, directing the chapel music and large ensembles.

He has now returned to a freelance career and is currently working on a number of projects. These include working as a member of music staff at Covent Garden on rehearsals and performances of Carmen and Falstaff, as well as conducting a new musical for children in London, and working in conjunction with the Royal Opera on writing an introduction for children to Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.
