Join Oxford Bach Choir

Would you like the thrill of singing with a mixed voice choir that has a great choral tradition going back over 100 years?

If you are thinking of joining a choir in Oxford, then singing with the Oxford Bach Choir is a wonderfully rewarding experience. As a singing member you will have the chance to rehearse and perform with one of the most respected amateur choirs in the UK.

You will meet like-minded people who share your interest in music and have an opportunity to experience singing with professional conductors, orchestras and soloists.

We are always keen to find new members in all voice parts who:

  • Have previous choral experience
  • Are confident and competent singers
  • Have reasonable sight-reading skills
  • Will be able to commit to three main concerts each season
  • Will be able to attend rehearsals, which take place in Oxford, mainly during university terms

More information…

For more information about joining Oxford Bach Choir please contact Catrin Roberts, our Membership Secretary, by email:

The choir performs three main concerts each season; these take place at the end of the three university terms. There is also a Christmas concert, in which all members are encouraged to participate. The season’s programme is varied and can include works by Bach, other well-known works from the traditional choral repertoire, more unusual and newer works and sometimes challenging commissions. Membership of the choir presents the opportunity to sing major choral works with leading orchestras and professional soloists, usually in the splendour of Christopher Wren’s Sheldonian Theatre in central Oxford, but also from time to time in Oxford Town Hall or in the Church of St John the Evangelist, Iffley Road.

Additional events

Oxford Bach Choir has an Events Choir, often asked to sing at functions such as weddings and memorial services. The choir also has an outreach programme, which involves collaboration with local schools and the County Music Service. Foreign trips are arranged from time to time: recently members went to Belgium, Portugal and Germany. There are also occasional invitations to join with other choirs, including the choir of St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle and Merton College Choir in Oxford. In May 2018, we sang with Gloucester Choral Society in Gloucester Cathedral and the Royal Festival Hall, in concerts to mark Parry’s centenary.

Rehearsal information

Rehearsals take place on Monday nights 7.30 pm – 9.30 pm during University terms at the Wesley Memorial church, New Inn Hall Street, Oxford OX1 2DH. In addition, there is one Saturday rehearsal each term. Members should be able to commit to all concerts and all rehearsals at the time of joining, although there is flexibility for rehearsals missed for unforeseen reasons.

Membership of the Choir is by audition. The Choir is actively recruiting for its spring and summer season, during which we will perform works by Bach, Mozart and Handel. Auditions, which are taken by Benjamin Nicholas, the Choir’s Principal Conductor, are held on a rolling basis; please see the home page for current dates. Auditions last no more than ten minutes and consist of singing a short prepared piece of your own choice, some scales or arpeggios, and sight-reading from a vocal score. The Membership Secretary will be very pleased to hear from prospective members wanting to sign up for an audition time or who have other queries about membership or the auditioning process. Please email

Open Rehearsal

Prospective members are warmly invited to join the Choir for the first rehearsal of term on 14th January. We will be singing Bach’s Trauer Ode – Cantata No 198, Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus and Mozart’s Requiem. There will be some vocal scores available to borrow or share. If you have your own copies, do please bring them. The rehearsal will be in the Wesley Memorial Church, New Inn Hall Street Oxford, from 7.30 to 9.30pm. Contact if you wish to come, so that we can make you welcome and have an idea of numbers.
