Would you like the thrill of singing with a mixed voice choir that has a great choral tradition going back over 100 years?

If you are thinking of joining a choir in Oxford, then singing with the Oxford Bach Choir is a wonderfully rewarding experience.  As a singing member you will have the chance to rehearse and perform with one of the most respected amateur choirs in the UK.

You will meet like-minded people who share your interest in music and have an opportunity to experience singing with professional conductors, orchestras and soloists.

We are always keen to find new members in all voice parts who:
  • Have previous choral experience
  • Are confident and competent singers
  • Have reasonable sight reading
  • Will be able to commit to three main concerts each season
  • Will be able to attend rehearsals which take place in Oxford mainly in Oxford terms

Performances

The Choir usually performs at least four concerts a year, which includes works by Bach but also music ranging from the well know choral works to the more unusual and challenging commissions. Concerts are usually held in the Sheldonian Theatre in central Oxford, but also from time to time in the Town Hall and in St John the Evangelist Church, Iffley Road.

Additional events

Oxford Bach Choir is often asked to sing at functions such as weddings and memorial services. Smaller groups from within the Choir are formed for this purpose. Foreign trips are arranged from time to time, and recently members went to Belgium, Portugal and Göttingen in Germany.

Occasionally we are invited to join with other choirs. Recently we have sung with the Choir of St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle and Merton College Choir in Oxford.

Auditions

Audition are normally taken by our musical director. They are friendly sessions and consist of simple scales and arpeggios to test for range and quality, aural assessments for pitch and rhythm, singing a short piece of your own choice, and a little sight reading.

Rehearsal information

Rehearsals take place on Monday nights 7.30 pm – 9.45 pm during full term. There will usually be a rehearsal on Bank Holiday Mondays in the summer term and a Saturday rehearsal or a concert 'run-through' prior to each concert.

Venue: Oxford Catholic Chaplaincy, The Old Palace, St Aldates, Oxford OX1 1RD

Concert information

There are currently three main concerts each season which will take place on the Saturday or Sunday of 7th week (occasionally 8th week). We expect all singers to commit to singing in all three concerts unless there are extenuating circumstances as to why they cannot, and to adhere to the Choir’s dress code.

There is also a Christmas concert in which we encourage all members to take part.

From time to time we are asked to take part in other events or to sing in concerts where we join with other choirs. These might involve the whole choir or just a section, and usually take place out of term time.

Members are kept up to date with any changes in rehearsals or extra events by the circulation of a weekly bulletin which is emailed to each member.
